TOPIK II PBT · Task 54

TOPIK II PBT Task 54: Prompt Analysis, Planning, and a Model Answer

Format and criteria, an analysis of the prompt’s three requirements, an argument plan, and a complete answer to TOPIK II No. 83 with translation and commentary.

In Task 54, you must present your own position on a given topic logically, address every requirement in the prompt, and connect a thesis, explanations, and specifics in formal written Korean.

The main task is not to insert a memorized template, but to understand what work each sub-question requires. Neither complex vocabulary nor a high word count can make up for an omitted question.

50 minutes in total

Officially, 50 minutes are allotted to all four PBT Writing tasks, not to No. 54 alone. How you divide that time remains your own test-taking strategy.

The prompt requires you to write your own thoughts rather than copy its wording. The guide reviewed does not state a separate ban on, or requirement for, a title in No. 54, so do not transfer the Task 53 title rule to it.

2. Break TOPIK II No. 83 into three required tasks

Task 54 prompt from the 83rd TOPIK II

3. How to analyse a topic and make a plan

Observed families of Task 54 prompts
FamilyWhat the prompt requiresKey check
Cause → result → actionExplain a need or effect and propose effortsThe action actually answers the stated cause
Advantages → disadvantages → positionExamine both sides and take a supported positionThe position does not replace analysis of one side
Characteristic → condition or methodDescribe a phenomenon and show under what conditions it worksA definition is not presented as a complete answer
Value → explanation → exampleShow significance, mechanism, and a concrete caseThe example supports the nearest thesis

These families come from a limited local sample of prompts and help you recognize what the sub-questions do. They are not an official exhaustive TOPIK classification or a reason to write the same three paragraphs in advance.

  1. 01

    Identify the subject

Name the phenomenon precisely; do not broaden the topic into any related social issue.

  2. 02

    List every requirement

Separate causes, results, comparison, evaluation, or solution: every sub-question needs a direct answer.

  3. 03

    Formulate a position

Write one testable idea that directs the whole text, rather than a neutral ‘there are pros and cons.’

  4. 04

    Develop the grounds

For each thesis, add why it is true, what it leads to, and what example or condition makes it concrete.

  5. 05

    Check coverage

Beside each prompt item, identify the paragraph and sentence where it is genuinely developed.

A mini content map before drafting
FieldQuestion for yourselfResult
ThesisWhat exactly am I claiming? One clear idea
ExplanationWhy does this happen or work?A causal or logical relationship
SpecificsWhat case, result, or condition shows it?An example without invented statistics
ConnectionHow does this part answer the overall topic?A return to the position, not a new topic

4. How to develop an argument instead of repeating a thesis

  1. Paragraph thesis
  2. Why it is true
  3. What it leads to
  4. Example or condition
  5. Connection to the overall position

An example does not replace a reason: it shows the mechanism in a concrete case. A counterargument is not needed just for quantity either; use it to mark the boundary of a position or explain why an alternative is weaker under the given conditions.

Sub-questions do not have to become mechanically identical paragraphs. One may require a cause, another a consequence, and a third a practical solution. The structure should reflect those functions.

5. A model answer to No. 83 and its content map

Below is an edited answer for study and analysis. It is not an official NIIED key or a text to memorize: its value is that every paragraph performs a separate task from the prompt.

How the three paragraphs cover the prompt
ParagraphTaskContent
1Why creativity is neededA new perspective, work with information, new attempts, and solving difficult problems
2What results it bringsProfessional achievement, cultural content, and socially useful technology
3How to develop itReading and experience, seeking causes, critical thinking, and seeking solutions
English translation of the answer

In modern society, which constantly demands change and development, creativity is essential. First, it brings a new perspective. In today’s age of abundant information, a new perspective makes it possible to integrate and use information from a differentiated viewpoint. In addition, our society finds it difficult to develop without new attempts; creativity helps people move beyond established thinking and try change. Finally, it plays an important role in solving problems that are difficult to solve through established ways of thinking alone.

Because creativity makes new thinking possible, exercising it can produce diverse results. One can achieve outstanding results in one’s field of work; in art and culture, one can create new content such as music or films and give people a fresh impression. In addition, one can invent new products or technologies that improve quality of life and thereby contribute to society.

To develop creativity, people should first broaden their thinking through reading and varied experience. They should also avoid focusing only on visible phenomena, explore the causes hidden behind them, and approach problems from a new perspective. Finally, they should not remain only with familiar answers, but continually seek new solutions based on critical thinking.

The semantic edit in the final sentence matters: the original 새로운 해결 방안이 없는지를 모색하다 meant looking for whether no new solution existed. The corrected 새로운 해결 방안을 꾸준히 모색하다 directly conveys the intended meaning—continually seeking new solutions. The rest of the text was not rewritten merely for artificial variety.

6. How to understand 600–700 characters and the 620/622 count

Technical counts for the same answer
ConventionResult
Without two paragraph separators620
Two separators, one character each622
Literal string with four LFs between three paragraphs624 Unicode code points

The figure 622 describes a chosen technical convention, not an official NIIED counter. The reviewed guide specifies a range of 600–700자, but does not publish a universal algorithm for counting spaces, punctuation, and line breaks.

In practice, keep a buffer inside the range and check every draft in the same way. Do not try to reach the length through empty repetition of the thesis or formatting.

For practice, divide the work into three checkpoints: before writing, mark the sub-questions and plan; after the draft, check coverage and the order of ideas; before submission, check language and length. Set the duration of each stage from your own pace and mock-test results. This is a learning strategy; officially, 50 minutes are allotted to all four PBT Writing tasks.

  1. 01

    Compare against the requirements

Every question has a separate substantive answer, not merely a mention of a keyword.

  2. 02

    Check that the arguments differ

Each following paragraph adds a new function rather than repeating the previous thesis.

  3. 03

    Check the examples

The specifics genuinely show the mechanism and introduce neither invented studies nor numbers.

  4. 04

    Check the logic

The linking words match the cause, consequence, contrast, or qualification that actually exists between the ideas.

  5. 05

    Check language and length

After revising the meaning, correct particles, endings, and spelling, then measure the text using your chosen method.

9. Frequently asked questions

Are exactly three paragraphs required?

There is no fixed official number of paragraphs. Prompt No. 83 has three substantive requirements, so three paragraphs make coverage transparent, but the structure should follow the functions of the specific task.

How can I fit within 600–700 characters?

First distribute the required ideas across paragraphs, then remove repetition and measure every draft using the same convention. The official guide reviewed gives the range but does not publish a universal digital counting algorithm.

Can I use a ready-made template?

You can automate planning and a few neutral language functions, but not rely on one complete ready-made text. Different prompts require causes, consequences, comparison, evaluation, or a solution, so a template must not replace answers to the sub-questions.
