Your goal and required level

Why take TOPIK: admission, work, and the level you need

Decide whether you need an official TOPIK result, who sets the requirement, and which level, format, and validity period to check before registering.

TOPIK is not needed for its own sake, but for a specific decision: submitting an application, meeting a programme requirement, proving Korean proficiency to an employer, or using a result in a procedure that accepts it.

So the right question is not ‘which level is considered good?’, but ‘who will receive my result, and exactly what does that recipient require by the relevant date?’

1. When you genuinely need a TOPIK result

NIIED lists admission to and graduation from Korean universities, employment, certain visa and residence-related procedures, GKS, and credit or graduation requirements for Korean-major programmes outside Korea among the ways TOPIK can be used.

This is a list of possible uses, not a promise of an outcome. The certificate itself does not guarantee admission, employment, a scholarship, or a visa: it only confirms an exam result if the relevant recipient agrees to accept it.

Your goal determines where to look for the requirement
GoalWhat TOPIK can confirmWho sets the ruleWhat to check
AdmissionA Korean-language exam resultThe university, faculty, and programmeMinimum level, format, alternatives, and deadline
Graduation or entry into a majorMeeting a language requirementProgramme rules for your yearThreshold, completion period, and accepted substitute
WorkKorean proficiency, if the employer accepts TOPIKThe employer or recruitment processWhether TOPIK is needed at all and which result is accepted
GKSOne of the documents, if the current intake provides for itThe guide for the specific track and yearThe role of the result, timing, and document set
Visa, residence, or authorised employmentA language indicator in a particular procedureThe responsible agencyProcedure type, current threshold, and alternatives
A personal goalAn externally measurable level benchmarkThe candidateWhether an official document is needed or diagnostics are enough

2. Which TOPIK do you need for university admission?

The government Study in Korea portal states that requirements vary by university and faculty. Even within one university, the threshold can depend on the programme, degree level, language of instruction, and stage—application, entry into a major, or graduation.

Saying ‘TOPIK 3 or 4’ without naming the programme and year does not answer an admission question. First open the official admissions guide, then find the Language Proficiency section and check the notes for your major.

Why you cannot transfer someone else's threshold to your programme
Dated exampleWhat the rules sayWhat you may conclude
SNU, undergraduate, spring 2026TOPIK 3 or alternatives provided by the rules are listed as Korean-language evidence; English-language evidence options are also listedThis application had several language routes; TOPIK 3 does not become a rule for every university
Yonsei, international undergraduate programme, 2026TOPIK 3 is listed before entry into a major and TOPIK 4 before graduation; separate substitutes are providedThe requirement can change between stages even within one programme
Your programmeThe current rule still needs to be openedCheck the university, faculty, programme, year, and language of instruction
  • Do not confuse the minimum application threshold with a guarantee of admission.
  • Do not transfer an undergraduate requirement to a master's degree or another major.
  • Check whether the programme accepts PBT, IBT, or both formats.
  • If the programme is taught in English, TOPIK may be optional or have a different role.
  • Check not only the level, but also the date by which the result must be published and valid.

3. TOPIK for work, GKS, and administrative procedures

An employer may use TOPIK as evidence of Korean proficiency, but there is no general level ‘for working in Korea’. The vacancy, recruitment process, or internal rule must state whether a certificate is needed and which result is accepted.

For GKS and government procedures, check TOPIK's role in the current guide for the specific track or process. The wording may concern eligibility, points, a language stage, or a later requirement—these roles cannot be replaced with one general table.

4. How to choose TOPIK I or TOPIK II from the requirement

Official level ranges

TOPIK II

Result validity

Result announcement date
A requirement translates into an exam route
Recipient's requirementWhich exam to considerWhat else to check
Level 1 or 2TOPIK IPBT/IBT, availability, and whether the format is accepted
Level 3, 4, 5, or 6TOPIK IIPBT/IBT, Writing, and the particular recipient's rules
Only ‘Korean proficiency’Do not choose an exam yetWhich document, level, and format are accepted
TOPIK is not specifiedCheck the alternativesDo not take the exam on an assumption alone

An official result is valid for two years from the results announcement date. Compare that date with the recipient's deadline, not only with the exam day.

PBT and IBT are different formats. The same level range does not prove that a particular recipient accepts both; you need to see this in its rules or obtain written confirmation.

5. Five checks before choosing an exam date

  1. 01

    Name the recipient

Write down the exact university, faculty, and programme; employer; GKS track; or government procedure.

  2. 02

    Find the primary rule

Open the official guide, announcement, or requirement page for the relevant year, not an undated retelling.

  3. 03

    Write down the full contract

Note the minimum level, accepted format, alternatives, document type, and exceptions.

  4. 04

    Check the calendar

The result must be announced before the deadline and remain valid on the required date.

  5. 05

    Only then choose the exam

Match the required level to TOPIK I or II, check the available format, and set a measurable preparation goal.

6. When you can wait before taking TOPIK

  • You have not yet chosen the recipient of the result and do not know why you need an official document.
  • The programme accepts another document, and TOPIK brings no added benefit to your application.
  • The results from the chosen session will be announced after the deadline.
  • The requirement names EPS-TOPIK or another exam, not regular TOPIK.
  • You currently need diagnostics and practice, and an official result is not needed within the next two years.

If you need an official document, have found the target level, and the calendar works, the next question is your starting point. Take a comparable attempt, analyse the limits, and prepare specifically for the chosen exam and format.

7. Frequently asked questions

Which TOPIK level is needed for admission to a Korean university?

There is no single level. Check the official guide for the specific university, faculty, programme, and year: requirements, stages, and accepted alternatives differ.

Is TOPIK 3 enough for admission?

Only if your programme explicitly accepts Level 3 at the relevant stage. That minimum condition does not guarantee admission and cannot be transferred to other universities.

Do you need TOPIK for a programme taught in English?

Not necessarily. Some programmes accept English-language evidence or set a separate language rule. Check the requirements for your own programme.

Which TOPIK level is needed for work in Korea?

There is no universal level. The employer, recruitment process, or specific procedure must state the requirement. Also check whether it refers to EPS-TOPIK.

Does TOPIK give you a visa or the right to work?

Not by itself. A result may be used in a particular procedure, but the decision and current criteria belong to the responsible agency.

Are TOPIK and EPS-TOPIK the same thing?

No. EPS-TOPIK belongs to a separate Employment Permit System route. Do not substitute regular TOPIK for it without a direct rule from the responsible authority.

How long is a TOPIK result valid?

An official result is valid for two years from the results announcement date. The recipient may additionally set its own date by which the document must remain valid.

Can you choose either format—PBT or IBT?

Only if the recipient accepts the chosen format and it is available in the required session. Identical level names do not mean they are automatically interchangeable.

Choose the right TOPIK exam and format

The decision has two parts: choose TOPIK I or TOPIK II for the level range you need, then verify whether your local session uses PBT or IBT. The four combinations have different item counts, timings and score scales.
